The Company Name. Businesses can spend extraordinary amounts of time searching for a name that they feel reflects their products, services, and company image. While many businesses hit home runs, like Microsoft, sadly there are others that were not so fortunate with their names: for example, Google’s original name was BackRub and LG actually stands for Lucky Goldstar.
Businesses change their names for many reasons.
Kentucky Fried Chicken had a name that perfectly expressed what their business offered. Namely, chicken seasoned with bluegrass spices and fried to perfection. However, concern regarding the treatment of their poultry pushed them to drop Chicken. Then the growing concern over eating fried foods made is necessary to remove Fried. Finally, the Commonwealth of Kentucky trademarked their name and began charging steep licensing fees for companies wishing to use “Kentucky”. This perfect storm of events finally forced the company to rename themselves KFC.
A company name reflects the company and the professionalism and reputation of a business are often thusly judged. Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web sounds like something out of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure but was really the original name of a cutting edge search engine: Yahoo.
Another common reason for a company to change their name is to avoid typecasting. Music World was a successful retail business in the mid-90s. They sold, obviously, music on various formats, but also offered videos, video games, and storage accessories. Without further investigation, the casual observer could reasonably conclude that Music World offered only music recordings costing them potential revenue from non-music sales.
